Ask The Grief Experts

Whatever you don’t talk about stays trapped inside of you, and can only do you harm—it can’t help. (Published 11/11/2014)

Q:

My son committed suicide In 2009. I was the last phone call he made and it went to my answering machine in the middle of the night. It’s been 2+ years now and I still have trouble sleeping before the hour of the phone call. I did not keep the recording but I can still hear it in my head as plain as day. My question is: What is a "normal" amount of time for this to continue? I don’t really have an outlet for the grief and do not talk very openly about my son’s death. I feel like I have to be the strong one but its eating me up inside. Any advice is welcomed. Thank you very much for your time.
