Your Broken Heart Talking! (Published 6-07-11)

I lost my husband of only 18 months, almost a year ago now. We were high school sweethearts. My question is in two parts. First when does the feeling of—it just feels like they are away like they are going to be right back, like even though you went through the funeral process you still have the feeling they will be right back—does this feeling ever leave?

Second part of the question: My kids are really starting to ask if I am going to move on to another relationship? I don't understand the length of the grieving cycle, the different stages per se. I don't want to continue on with someone else until I am for sure I am completely—as well as can be at least in this situation—ready emotionally and mentally. What is a normal time frame for the normal widow to grieve?

Dear Kimberly,

Thanks for your note and your two questions. Both of them relate to time zones that no one can accurately answer.

The best way we can explain the problem with time, is that time can’t fix a broken heart any more than time can fix a flat tire. It takes actions in both situations.

Compounding the problem is that most people have been led to believe that Time Heals All Wounds, but it doesn’t because it can’t. And when time doesn’t heal, it seems to get worse.

When I read your first question, I immediately realized that you are trapped in the idea that at some point in time, those feelings and thoughts about him just being off on an errand and would be right back, will lift and your life will change. But, the sad end of your question, “does this feeling ever leave?” indicates that it’s not getting better and is probably getting worse.

And, in fairness to you, we believe that those feelings represent your “broken heart talking,” and that you miss him very much. To be sad and to miss someone you love is normal and even healthy.

Until or unless you take some actions to complete what was left emotionally unfinished by his death, it is unlikely that anything will change for you. The good news is that there are actions that can help you discover and complete what was left emotionally incomplete for you when your husband died. The actions are spelled out in detail in The Grief Recovery Handbook, which is available in most libraries and all books stores. In fact, the subtitle is The Action Program for Moving Beyond Death, Divorce, and Other Losses including Health, Career, and Faith.

We believe that as a partial result of taking the actions outlined in the book, that sense of him just being away for a while will diminish and allow you to restart the rest of your life. You may still love him and miss him but you will be able to move forward.

And, you will be able to be emotionally and mentally ready and available to be in a new relationship—if you choose to do that—and not sabotage it with the unfinished business from your past.
