Tributes.com Launches ‘Light a Candle’ Program In Support of the American Heart Association and Heart Health Month

Online Candles Honor Deceased Friends and Family, Encourage Charitable Giving

BOSTON, MA – (February 9, 2009) – Tributes.com, the online resource for local and national obituary news, today launched the ‘Light a Candle’ program– offering consumers the opportunity to place a virtual candle in memory of their loved ones.  Visitors can now light candles or place online gifts on any of the more than 84 million current and historical obituaries available on the popular national obituary news site as well as share photos, videos, recollections, and other artifacts of a treasured life.

In addition to allowing users to light a free virtual candle, Tributes.com offers the option of lighting a candle in honor of a charity, and to make donations in support of various fundraising and awareness campaigns happening throughout the year.

To kick off Heart Health Month in February, and in support of the American Heart Association (AHA), Tributes.com proudly presents the Red Candle which can be lit in honor of those who have passed away from cardiovascular disease or stroke.  During the month of February, all proceeds from the Light a Candle program will be donated to support the AHA’s efforts in building healthier lives.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and is a major cause of disability. Almost 700,000 people die of heart disease in the U.S. each year. “The American Heart Association greatly appreciates the efforts Tributes.com has put forth to help bring hope to millions of people suffering from cardiovascular diseases.  It is only through the generosity and support of promotions such as this one that will make the   possibility for our children to live healthier, happier lives a reality” said Jo Wise, Manager of Donor Relations and On-line Fundraising.

“The act of lighting a candle in honor of those who have passed is a centuries old tradition that allows us to express what we cannot communicate with words,” noted David Kessler, grief specialist for Tributes.com.  “A single candle is a symbol of the human spirit and can bring darkness into light.”

“Families increasingly rely on Tributes.com to communicate obituary and service information to extended family and friends and to tell and preserve the rich stories of their loved ones lives,” said Tributes.com President Elaine Haney. “The Light a Candle program offers another way to remember and pay tribute, and an excellent fundraising and awareness tool to promote and support worthy charities.”
