Paul and I served together in Army at Fort Riley ,Ks. late 61/early 62. He was very good/generous allowing me to fly in a private plane from the Post to GB and get me into the game vs. Bears.. (row 2/50 yd line). Was quite the experience for sure.

Our Lady of Victory guide your son, Paul Hornung, directly to heaven so he will be with Family , Friends, Relatives and Teammates who have passed on. The Notre Dame phrase" Play Like a Champion" says everything about how Paul Hornung approached everything in life. God Bless! My most sincere condolences go out to his family and close friends.

PAUL HORNUNG WAS MY IDOL AS A TEENAGE GREEN BAY PACKER FAN. HIS EXPLOITS ON THE FIELD, MADE ME PROUD TO BE A PACKER FAN, LIVING IN NYC AMONG NY GIANT FANS. I LOVED THE PACKERS AND PAUL WAS JUST ONE REASON. STRANGELY, SIX MONTHS AGO I SENT HIM A LETTER INQUIRING ABOUT HIS HEALTH AND LIFE. I DIDN'T GET A REPLY. I WASN'T AWARE HE WAS SUFFERING FROM DEMENTIA. IT IS SO SAD TO THINK OF THE VIBRANT HORNUNG INCAPACITATED BY THIS CRUEL DISEASE. MY HEART GOES OUT TO HIS FAMILY. THE ONE BRIGHT THOUGHT TO PAUL'S DEATH IS THAT NOW HE WILL BE REUNITED IN HEAVEN WITH LOMBARDI, TAYLOR, STARR, AND THE OTHER PACKER GREATS WHO HAVE PASSED ON. RIP.

My sincere condolences to Angela and the Hornung family. I was 14 when someone told my father that Notre Dame had a football player named Hornung on the team. Paul was a sophomore at the time and I listened to every game for the times that he was in the game. Our family referred to him as "Cousin Paul." I even figured out how he could be related although after a while decided that he was a very distant cousin. When he was a junior, I wrote to him and was delighted when he sent me two pictures--one of them autographed. I listened to every game he played. Since we considered him "family," we were thrilled with all his accomplishments: Heisman Trophy winner, Bonus draft choice, and then he played for the Packers, our favorite team even though we lived in PA. Paul was undoubtedly the best player -- he could do everything on the field. I was saddened to see that he had passed away. It was the end of an era.

One of the all time Greats!, back when football was football and men were men. I grew up and am still a die hard Green Bay Packer fan. He will always be one of the NFL's (and Green Bay's) all time Greatest. Thoughts and prayers to all family and friends. RIP Paul

I was in 8th grade when Hornung starred at quarterback on a hapless Terry Brennan coached team. He was truly the Golden Boy of that era. I enjoyed his ups & downs w/Lombardi & the Pack; thought his conversion to half back by Lombardi was a natural. I was at UCLA law school when he got married in Beverly Hills. I
remember thinking it was about time for him to settle down while he still had
knees. Over the years I saw him every once in a while on tv as an NFL “color” guy; always reminded me of his great football days. Last year I was in Green Bay (passing through) my brother and I stopped at Lambeau Field & bought one thing for me: Jersey #5 with Paul’s name on it. Paul Hornung, RIP.

Paul, you were my childhood football hero along with the rest of the Packers in the Lombardi era. I followed you through your days of announcing for Notre Dame. Thank you for all the memories. May god bless your sole and may you forever rest in peace.

The heroes of my youth are now leaving us. Paul was the lighting of the Packer backfield with Taylor being the thunder. I can still recall Ken Bowmen snapping the ball to Bart Starr, handing it off to #5 and him running the Green Bay power sweep being led by Jerry Kramer and Fuzzy Thurston. It seems like yesterday. Those were tough guys. One heck of a team in heaven to be sure!

I lived in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and I would go to the airport when the Packers came back from a game. Paul Hornung wrote a special autograph for me on his arrival after a game. That really was really special to me. Years later, my good friend Charles Heitzman of Louisville, Ky related some of his interaction with him.
My prayers for the Hornung family.

To the Hornung Family
I have heard about Paul my whole life from my father (Bill Shade) who lived in Portland and sort of took Paul under his wing since he could see his athletic ability. He would furnish him with sports equipment and give him advice. My dad was very proud of Paul and loved watching him play. Paul also used to refer to my father as his first Lombardi. Dad was like a father to Paul.
I am happy those two will be together in Heaven and looking down and protecting us.
Rest in Peace Golden Boy.

Please accept my deepest condolences to the Family for your loss. Paul was a legend indeed, a valuable teammate for the Green Bay Packers. May Almighty God in the Heavens comfort your grieving hearts during this time of sorrow. May His arm of strength support each day as you miss Paul in your lives. Thank you for his contribution to the Football League and the legacy he left behind.

Angela, you and Paul are in my prayers. Paul was one of the most determined persons I've ever known that devoted his career to unequalled EXCELLENCE. Another person I knew with the same determination was my friend since 1976, NBA Commissioner, David Stern. They both have now passed this year, but their determination for CAREER EXCELLENCE is and was utterly remarkable. I was honored, in my life, to know both of them and I consider it a great fortune. I'm saddened that you (and we) have now lost Paul amongst us -- but his memory for determined EXCELLENCE will live forever and he will have a place in Heaven that will be special - because it will be filled with others who lived a life of CAREER EXCELLENCE.

My favorite relative, my great Uncle Chuck Hornung, explained to me an 8 year old in 1964 that if I thought I was related to the great #5 Paul Hornung then I was. I did get to meet and speak with him in 1998 in Florida. (albeit a racetrack). He was a real humble gentleman. I have am blessed with a framed #5 Green Bay Packer autographed jersey on my wall today. Godspeed Paul Hornung.

When I was a young kid around eight years old, my daddy said "see that guy right there playing football for the Green Bay Packers, he is from Louisville and he's the best of all time." He became my idol and I even wrote his mother, Loretta, whom also lived in Louisville, in the Portland area, and I told her that Paul is my idol and would you please send me an autographed picture of him. To make a long story short, she did and I still have that picture hanging in my room. I even saw him last year at Churchill Downs the Friday after Thanksgiving (because he's always there the day after Thanksgiving) and he signed a few more memorabilia for me, that's the great man he was. He will be sorely missed. Rest In Peace Golden Boy.

Paul was taught ROTC by my dad at Notre Dame and was my confirmation godfather, with another player, Ralph Guglielmi. They and most others football players were frequent guests at our South Bend house. They became lifelong friends with my parents. I went with Paul and my dad and mom to a Notre Dame vs LSU game. We were a group of about 10 dressed in Irish Green!
RIP Paul.

Amazing all-purpose back; multi-talented on and off the field. The Golden Boy could do it all. Accomplished, good-looking, indefatigable, and charismatic. He could even charm the notoriously tough Vince Lombardi! Paul's versatile abilities on the field, toughness, and leadership traits in all settings, garnered universal respect.
When I think of the credos "Run To Daylight," "Find The Endzone," and "Run To Win," Paul Hornung always comes to mind.
Thanks for the memories, your service to our country, and for serving as a model in so many aspects of life, Paul. You were a brilliant presence; a Golden Boy in a golden age of professional and Packer football.

I saw Paul play against #1 Oklahoma at Notre dame in 1956. ND was 2-8 that season.
What can you say about a guy who was:
1. the quarterterback
2. the punter
3. the punt returner
4. the kick off guy
5. the kickoff returner
6. the extra point kicker
7. the field goal kicker
8. AND was an excellent player on defense
This is what you say.......WOW! :)
R.I.P. Mr. Hornung

Thanks for your playing days. My cousin and I were big fans of you and the Packers. We were lucky enough to grow up in what we call, the best era ever in football. We player like, we were you. Of course with 3 seconds left in the game and had to throw a game winning pass. Enough said about us as kids. God bless you and al your family, both at home and the Packer family. Prayers for everyone.
