Reading Ms. Lucille's obituary brought back memories of my education during the 60s. My parents, like Lucille, wanted the best education possible for me. I, like Ruby, was the only Black student in many of my classes. We had to endure a lot of unkind words. In some places today, the attitude of some has not changed. My educational experiences have made me determined to make sure that my son and my grandsons receive the best education possible. It has also embolden my resolve to do all I can to augment their education in whatever way I can. My salute to Lucille Bridges, a pioneer who gave her all to set a new educational precedent. True equality is yet to come. Until that time, we like Ruby, true admirers of Lucille Bridges, will hold our heads up high!

Lucille Bridges was a great Lady, in the simplest of ways. She was a mother who recognized the importance of Education and was determined to do what she could to ensure her kids would have access to that which would enable them to realize their full potential. To think there was a moment in history when that was deemed to be controversial is an important lesson for everyone who, like me, was unaware of many of the details behind the depiction of adorable young Ruby heading off to school under federal guard until just last week when it was recycled in some way to commemorate a new milestone for our nation. The Rockwell painting was obviously stylistic, the aggression and scene are documented, but only with a cartoonish representation of danger. The courage and determination of Ms. Lucille Bridges to confront a much more tangible threat and her motivation for doing so are awe-inspiring. I saw an interview where Lucille Bridges said something like her own education had been cut short but she wanted to what she could to make sure all young people were educated. I hope she realizes now that she herself, by her person, has delivered on that goal by educating many people young and even not so young by her example. Thank you to the Bridges family for allowing us to share in your Mother’s important lessons.

Being a teacher for 38 years, I could appreciate the story of Ruby Bridges and how this brave little girl entered school in a time of segregation. This picture represents any young person striving to get an education. I attended an all Black School and got a wonderful education from some of the best teachers. This was my inspiration to becoming a teacher. My role model was my cousin who lived with us and on becoming an educator, I knew this was what I wanted to do.

I want to say thank you and I also thank The Lord for you, your daughter and family. I was able to walk in doors that was freely because of what you and your family was willing to endure.
