thankful that I knew you*
(in memory of Joe Morgan, Cincinnati Reds)
by Ruth Esther Gilmore
this morning i watched hope flutter by
on the wings of a monarch butterfly
and per definition it landed on the window sill
of my wounded bleeding heart
a never-ending blast of warmth
spread itself through the curtains
of my soul deleting at will my pain
i had started
to believe i would never lose the pain again
where can i hide to avoid the next silent arrow?
how should i deal with loss? how can
i find happiness without you? i
can only smile and remember our shared past
and be thankful that i knew you

Sincere condolences from the Edd Roush family to the Morgan family.
Although they were both Cincinnati Reds and members of the Baseball Hall of Fame, they played 50 years apart. At the 2005 Induction, Joe claimed that Edd was the "greatest Red of us all."

Little (BIG) Joe Morgan! He Came to Cincinnati and few of us could dream that he would be the embodiment of the Big Red Machine, the glue. Johnnie Bench says he was the best he'd ever seen. Who could argue? Joe never stole a base the Reds didn't need. Team player and a class act, period. God bless you, Joe, thanks for the wonderful memories of baseball the way we used to play it. Rest in Peace, Sir!

Joe Morgan was not only an amazing Baseball Hall of Famer but a wonderful humanitarian who helped and cared about others-he gave his time and efforts for many, many years to the Summit Bank Foundation in Oakland, Ca. working as the Honorary Chairman with the Board of Directors to raise money for student scholarships, UCSF Cancer research and other worthwhile causes-working with Joe was an honor and he will be missed by all-God Bless you and your family! ❤

My heart is still sadden on the passing of Joe Morgan. I considered him as one of the best MLB second basement doing his time. I'm 65 years old. I played little league baseball. We used to go see the Astros play in the late sixty. I played second base. Wanted to be like Joe. Family you have my sincere condolences.

So very sorry to hear Joe Morgan has passed. My uncle always listened to baseball games on the radio. He got excited when he heard Joe Morgan was up to bat. Then he would stand up and show us Joe Morgan’s signature elbow move. Such fond memories. Hold them dear. May God comfort and heal the sad hearts of the family and friends.

Joe, you were a beautiful bright shining light in the world. I always admired you for always trying for perfection in all that you did. You didn't waste any moment of your shining life. You brought such joy to everyone watching you play baseball with the walks, stealing bases, double plays, and home runs. You could do it all and continued to bring that same enthusiasm to other endeavors after you retired from playing baseball. I had the pleasure of meeting you back in 1974 through mutual friends. To be truthful, I expected you to be a real hot dog, obnoxious superstar and to my amazement, you were down-to-earth, intelligent, with a great sense of humor. And that beautiful smile and great voice WOW, what a delight. You lit up every space you occupied. So grateful to have known you. The world will be less bright with your passing but heaven will be much brighter and more fun. All our hearts are broken but those closest to you must truly be devastated by your passing. I pray for them and the pain they must be feeling. I hope we meet again. Rest in joy. Love always & forever.

I want Mr. Morgan's family to know that as a farm child, my older brother and I would hurriedly get our chores done so we could watch Cincinnati Reds Baseball with that lineup, including the best 2nd baseman in all of the sport, along with Johnny Bench, etc. I learned many life lessons from those Saturday baseball games, especially the tremendous work ethic and professional demeanor associated with CLASS athletes and individuals. I am very grateful for the opportunity to share my memories of the game and of Mr. Morgan. Please accept my sincere sadness for your loss. What a great American and example for others! May you rest in peace, Joe Morgan!

How did Joe Morgan do it? How is he, not only in our hearts, but also statistically one of the greats of all time? Well, listen to his announcing the games... he had an unfair advantage... he knew what was coming before the opposing pitcher did. Boy was he good!
A down to earth, kind and generous man. Surely goodness and lovingkindness follow him.
What a man. What a blessing to us all! Love and thanks, Steve Richards
Dear Morgan family, may Jesus comfort your hearts.

The year was 1976 and the REDS had just won a Championship through our 8TH Grade teacher at Saint Peters in San Francisco, Mr. Morgan was brought to our class to speak. Frankly, I had no clue who was coming and why as I was an 8th grader from "El Barrio" with very little exposure to a whole lot of things. But over the years , I heard about Mr. Morgan and saw him often announcing games. He was ICONIC of strength and goodness to me and gave me inspiration even today. I never met Mr. Morgan again but that 8th grade memory, the few I have, was huge, Just like MR. Morgan. GOD BLESS!

I used to listen to Joe do the games on Radio and TV. I realized immediately that I better start writing things down that He said because everything he said was worthwhile. He revealed layer after hidden layer that I never knew existed regarding the game of baseball. His sincerity and decency radiated from the radio and tv when he called a baseball game. As a Sixty four year old man I have seen my share of Joy , happiness, and sadness. Being fortunate enough to hear Joe call games on tv and radio and now in his passing I can say that all three have been of the most purest form. I never met him but He made me feel like He was talking directly to me when I listened to him do the games. I don't think what Joe had can be taught to anyone trying to emulate his style. It's in the heart. You either have it or you don't and He definitely had it. My heart is broken by his passing. Thanks for the memories Joe. Condolences to the family and friends.

I am very saddened to read of the Death of Mr. Morgan. I will always remember Him as a Houston Astro, I would see Him play when I was kid, in the Astrodome. He was one of my Basenall Heroes. I also Loved to listen to Him talk on Sundy Night Baseball, how He would explain the Games inside the Game of Baseball. I could listen to Mr. Morgan talk Baseball all day! Baseball is a great Game, He made the Game of Baseball! Heck, He was the Game of Baseball! Rest In Peace Mr. Morgan, may God Bless Your Family!
I know that You are turning Double Plays up in Heaven!

Always got a chuckle out of his elbow pump at the plate, but Joe's remarkable all-around talents were seriously all-time great calibre. Being a standout in that mighty "Big Red Machine" lineup proved that! Raised, starred, and spent his last days in the SF Bay Area. Joe's announcing work was also well-respected and received, in the Bay Area (where he worked on the Giants' cable network for years) and nationally. His intelligence, communications skills, and overall knowledge of the game were so impressive, that his name was often mentioned when there were considerations for managerial positions.
Joe had a such vibrant presence, and it was shocking and saddening to see the news of his passing. Rest in peace, Joe. You were a superstar in so many respects, and a Baseball Man in the truest sense.

To the Morgan Family:
I remember Joe and the Cincinnati Reds opposing the Oakland Athletics in the 1970s. My mom was the Reds' fan and I was the Athletics' fan ; those memories always bring flashbacks of the times that she and I rooted for our favorite teams with fun and laughter. Mom loved to see Joe flap his arm as he was getting ready to bat . She would say that he's flapping it as a chicken would.
May he rest peacefully in the safest arms in Life : "JESUS' !
