Dear Gates Family -

After seeing an interview where he spoke about taxing the wealthy I have long admired your Beloved Husband, Father and Grandfather. After reading this wonderful tribute I see the incredible mark he made on the world and understand your tremendous loss.

My own mother lived with Alzheimer’s and I had the privilege of caring for her every weekend for 8 years so she could remain in her home in familiar surroundings. Despite the circumstances we made some wonderful memories and cherish those times together. She taught school for over 40 years and we felt it fitting to donate her brain to OHSU for research and educational purposes. It is such an insidious disease. I’m hopeful that one of the Legacies of The Gates Foundation is aiding in not only finding a cure but assisting families like ours who sacrificed jobs and savings to care for loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease.

Hold those dear memories close to your hearts, find comfort in them and know you are not alone. Peace be with you all during this difficult time and in the days ahead.

I am so sorry about the loss of Mr. Gates Sr. The Gates family has my deepest condolences. I pray that you will be surrounded continuously with love and support. And, as you go through this difficult time, may Almighty God give you everlasting comfort (2 Thess. 2:16).
