C.T. Vivian
July 30, 1924 - July 17, 2020

My condolences to the family. Kira, my mother Janice Taylor wanted to reconnect so she could extend her sympathies as well, but she passed away in September and never confirmed to me that she reached you. My mom was in town on her birthday last year (July 17) and reminisced about you later when she heard the news. She considered you a great friend and had so much respect for your convictions in your faith and commitment to your community. You came by that honestly as both your parents set a remarkable example for the world. Again, I am sorry for your loss and wish you much peace and healing.

I was blessed to be a witness to Dr. C.T. Vivian continued legacy after the Civil Rights movement influencing the next generation within corporate America; I was a minority in a cohort among a large group of leaders at Nortel Networks in 1991 where Dr. Vivian delivered Race Awareness training to many classes over many months, if not years. His work had an authentic impact on the mindset, behaviors, and practices in the workplace and was a blessing to me personally along with my colleagues, especially non-Black participants. I am forever grateful for being "a student" and beneficiary of his workshop outcomes and for the chats we shared during class breaks during those intense sessions. A great man!

Paying Tribute to Greatness.
I was unaware of the creation of the program "Visions" designed and implemented by Rev. Vivian, an educational initiative provided to Black children, in 1965, towards higher education opportunities, helping hundred and hundreds of youth attend College. The United States Department of Education, recognizing the "greatness" of the Program, began Upward Bound, a federally funded education program, mirroring Visions, continues to this Day.

Praying for Peace and Comfort for the Family of Rev. C.T. Vivian.

Dear Uncle Cordy,
When I reflect upon your life I think of Joshua 1:9 "Be strong and courageous for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." This is how you lived your life. You were a wonderful mentor and friend. Your legacy lives on in your children, grandchildren, and future descendants. I will carry your legacy as well and continue to serve as you served. You always stood for what was right knowing that God was with you. You let your light shine for the entire world to see. I hope to hear what you heard from God our Father on July 17, 2020, "Well done my good and faithful servant" Matthew 25:21

Words can't describe the emotions I have after hearing the loss of Rev.Dr.C.T. Vivian. C.T. has known me and my family for decades. He has known me since my preteen years. He was a mentor and a very dear friend. He always found time to call me and just share his wisdom and guidance. As I grew professionally, C.T. was always there. I had the fortunate experiences to even join with him during some of his workshops. I extend my condolences to the entire Vivian family. This country and the world has lost a true hero.

I will miss you C.T.

His Lord said to him,'Well done good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of the Lord.' Matthew 25:21

I have read countless articles about this brave warrior for our Civil and Human Rights in this country. As a young boy growing up in the community that he was raised in by his mother,he was the only black child amongst his caucasian classmates. Unknowingly to him at that time,The Lord, was preparing him for a most challenging, difficult task which would allow him to achieve greatness while being beaten, injured and jailed for his people. Reverend C.T.Vivian,I knew your son Cory,a humble person, raised by loving parents, but I never met you.You are one(1) of my HEROES,for the bravery shown as you endured hardness and hardships. God bless your memory, family at this time.Your race has been SUCCESSFULLY RUN,WELL DONE MY GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT.THANK YOU FOR BEING A GOOD SOLDIER OF JESUS CHRIST.

TO THE FAMILY OF THE LATE REV C.T. VIVIAN MAY GOD BLESS AND COMFORT YOU AS YOU CELEBRATE THE LIFE OF YOUR LOVE ONE WHO WAS A CIVIL RIGHTS PIONEER.

I stand behind the legends

By; Charles G. Turner, Sr.

I stand behind the legends

who paved the way

that got us to where we are today

there were many who knocked down walls

so that we can be seen standing tall

I stand behind the legends

who braved many storms

and stood against all harm

I stand behind the legends who had the courage to stand up and fight

they walked, talked and marched both day and night

for us to have our civil rights

I stand behind the legends who fought with God by their side

as their true and only guide

that enabled them to fight their way

so that we can have a better day

I had the opportunity to meet the late Rev. C.T. Vivian during my visit to Washington DC when I went to visit the MLK Memorial and I saw him and members of his staff. He was having what appeared to be a dehydration episode after being in the sun too long after filming a documentary. As a retired member of the US Coast Guard and EMT I rendered assistance and helped to get him a wheelchair and called for an ambulance. His assistant had asked me for my name and I gave him my Martial Arts Contact card. You never know who you help in life and I am grateful to have helped someone that was an icon. RIP Dear Sir. Your contributions made a difference.

RIP C.T. I met C.T. in the early 90's at a Racial Awareness Training Seminar in North Carolina. C.T. changed my life forever. It was a 2 day session and on the first day he was pretty tough on us. He went around the room and asked if we were racist. I was first to go and I told C.T. I tried not to be. He said "you are" and said "next". Really kind of made me mad and at least one other person left and didn't come back. By the end of the 2 day session I was hugging him goodbye. A few years I later I was lucky enough to attend again with his son presenting. Thank you C.T.

How blessed was I to have had the chance to meet this legend by pure circumstance. He and his wife attended the Phi Beta Sigma Centennial-Orchid Ball held in Washington DC in the summer of 2014. The event was packed and tables were in short supply. I commandeered a table and prepared myself to do battle with any one who would dare ask me to move. It was about that time that Bro Virgil Woods and his guests approached me and asked if they could share my table. I jokingly told them that they could only if they were willing to help me fight if need be to keep our prized seating. Laughingly, they all agreed that they would join me in the fight. We exchanged names, pleasantries and histories. It was then that I learned that I was dining with civil rights royalties. Neither Rev. Vivian put up pretentious airs. They were very humble and willing to pass on the torch of service and humanity. I only new him for a few hours, but I will remember him forever. Rest in Peace my brother. You indeed fought a good fight.
